This project has come about through a desire to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Leominster. Halo Leisure have a target of reducing the carbon emissions from their operations by 30% by 2020 and are in the process of completing a number of energy efficiency measures at the Bridge Street Sports Centre. These include replacing boilers with more efficient condensing boilers, using sensors to reduce lighting usage and installing more energy efficient lighting, reducing unwanted heat gains through windows with anti-glare film and upgrading their building control system to make their use of energy more efficient.
It is anticipated that this solar array will produce about 42,000kWh every year, which is likely to be entirely used by the sports centre. This will reduce their emissions by approximately 10% at this sports centre and save the equivalent of 22.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide, compared to importing electricity from the grid.
